Two years ago, a group of concerned professionals from different agencies in Butler County Ohio banded together to discuss adult prevention. Most prevention efforts are focused on youth. Those messages include abstience and delaying the onset of use. Those messages don’t work for adults. In our country, adults over 21 years of age are legally allowed to drink but are not told how much and how often. This group of professionals sought to investigate this issue and come up with ways to address this problem.
First, professionals from various prevention and treatment agencies attended training to learn one curriculum which teaches lifestyle risk reduction. This training gave the agencies a framework to teach adults how to make low risk decisions. Other programs were investigated and used as well. Each program was presented and evaluated for effectiveness, cost and ease of presentation. After a year of this process, it was decided that there was not a program that completely fit the needs of the adults in our county. We are currently in the process of creating our own curriculum which will use the USDA guidelines to teach adults about low risk choices regarding drinking.
This information has been presented on the local college campus, at Ohio Prevention and Education Conference and at local community agencies and organizations.
Our funding comes from the Greater Cincinnati Health Foundation and the Butler County Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board.
